Login screen does not display on external screen

Asked by Akerbeltz

I have an external monitor connected to my Ubuntu laptop via a VGA cable. Before the upgrade to 18.04.1, when I fired up the laptop, the login screen would correctly display on the external monitor (as long as the cable was connected) but since the upgrade, the login screen only displays on the laptop screen. Once I enter the user password, it automatically flips to the external montior but not before.

This is probably a bug but I'll be jigswiggered if i can find a way of reporting a bug of this nature.

Akerbeltz,

i have similar problem...
and a work-around:

once you expect the login-screen to be displayed,
just move the mouse horizontal (left-right).

In my case the login screen pops up on the external screen too.

It is not the most ideal solution, but for me it is working fine.

Greetings,

It is a helpful workaround (if it works, I will try later) but it is still a bug that needs fixed. It's not reasonable for users to be able to guess at this workaround or even for them to have to use this workaround routinely.

Doesn't work. I've only just realized that it doesn't recognize the external keyboard either. The only peripheral it reconizes is the mouse and if I move that left-right, it causes the cursor to display on the external screen but the login remains on the laptop screen only.

Dear Akerbeltz,

surfing around on the website AskUbuntu i found this suggestion:
 http://AskUbuntu.com/questions/1150597/solved-how-can-i-set-my-external-monitor-as-primary-monitor
A summary of the suggestion is:

If you are logged in you can also use the terminal to change the screen. Just open a terminal via keys "alt" + "ctrl" + "t" and then print "xrandr" and run command. This will output the available screen ports, e.g. LVDS-1 is the laptop screen and VGA-1 is the port for external monitor (could be also HDMI-1, ...). You can mirror the screen with command "xrandr --output VGA-1 --same-as LVDS-1". This will mirror between Laptop screen and VGA output. Names and outputs are depending on your system.

I do not know whether this is helpful for you.

Still looking for a working solution for both our problems.
Wim

Hi Wim

Thanks - there are many ways in which one can work around this specific problem (I just flip open the laptop to login and then close it again) but such workarounds are not good for the average end user, which is why I am keeping this bug open. IMO, the failure of FOSS to prioritize ease-of-use for non-hacker end-users is our biggest shortcoming and I try and push it up the agenda whenever I can.
