Quake 3 Installation in Ubuntu 18.04

Hi, I am struggling to find a step by step installation guide for Quake 3. I really love this game and i will even pay for it if you can help me.

What I have done so far is: Installed Q3 Arena using Ubuntu 18.04 built in Software tool.
installed the other bits with packager using commands:
game-data-packager -d ~/Downloads quake3
game-data-packager --install quake3

The readme file states as follows, I don't understand the '/path/to/search' bit so I left it out and progressed with installation as above.

    game-data-packager -d ~/Downloads quake3 /path/to/search
        Save the generated package to ~/Downloads to install later

    game-data-packager --install quake3 /path/to/search
        Install the generated package, do not save it for later

The game will not start of course, so can anyone offer any help please?

Please also note I downloaded the baseq3/pak0.pk3, the whole Q3 disc but I don't know what to with it.
