Message that native host connector is not detected in Firefox for gnome-shell-extensions

Asked by dln949 on 2019-01-05

Ubuntu 18.04, (Xorg), gnome shell 3.28.3, kernel 4.18.0-13-generic, chrome-gnome-shell 10-1 (bionic) installed, Firefox 64.0 (64 bit), GNOME Shell Integration 10.1 installed from the Firefox addons repository. The computer also has version 2.18.4-2 of python-requests installed.

When I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/, I get this error message:

"Although GNOME Shell integration extension is running, native host connector is not detected. Refer documentation for instructions about installing connector."

Also, when I go to the preferences for the GNOME Shell integration extension in Firefox, it tells me this:

"Your native host connector does not support check for GNOME Shell extensions updates. Probably python-requests package is missing."

I do not have this problem using the Chrome or the Brave web browsers.

In this github posting, https://github.com/nE0sIghT/chrome-gnome-shell-mirror/issues/94, I was told this:

"Because Google Chrome works for you - it's not issue with chrome-gnome-shell, but issue with your Firefox/chrome-gnome-shell distro packages.
And deeply - it's issue with Firefox's bad behavior.

It's really hard to say what's wrong with your Firefox because although Mozilla documented single place for native messaging manifests - its real location is depends on build environment (libdir)...... Your Firefox package using some custom libdir and your chrome-gnome-shell package didn't installed manifest file to location expected by Firefox.
This is a bug in chrome-gnome-shell Ubuntu package and it should be resolved by package maintainer."

Then later in that github conversation the "owner" said I need to ask about this problem here on Launchpad. Sooooo......

Here I am - a true computer novice in this kind of stuff!! - hoping someone can explain what is wrong and how it should be fixed.

(The person in the github conversation told me to read the instructions at this link to submit a bug in Launchpad - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Filing_a_general_bug_against_no_particular_package - but oh my gosh, after about one hour of going over and over that I still had no idea what it was trying to tell me to do nor which "category" (??) of bugs my case belonged in, then I stumbled across this option where I can simply just ask a question.)
