switch to unity without a login screen

Asked by Bob

I did this
https://itsfoss.com/use-unity-ubuntu-17-10/

At the installation time, you’ll be asked whether you want to switch to LightDM
that never happened.

1/2 down the page it says "restart your system. At the login screen, click on the Ubuntu symbol"
But I don't have a login screen. I dropped it a long time ago. It was a useless step for me.
So how do I switch it to Unity?

Log off and you can select at the logon page. Did you set autologin when you installed?

I don't have a login screen.
Did you set autologin when you installed?
I think so. I dropped it 4 or 5 years ago. So I really don't remember.

What happens when you log off (not shut down, but log off)?
You should then get a login screen.

Are you serious? You were not able to find out how to log off?

Use the buttons in the top right corner of your screen.

I don't use that button I have a shutdown button on my dock.
Are you serious? That did nothing. All I got was a black screen. Lost control, mouse stopped working. So I turned the power off and restarted.
