During bootup do you get as far as the menu with lots of Ubutnu options? One should have "recovery mode" at the end. Using this try the "fix x-server" to hopefully get you graphics back to defaults.

Also if you know how to use 'apt-get' then drop to the Root Shell & install "envyng-gtk" (assuming Ubuntu rather than Kubuntu, otherwise let us know).

Once you've continued the normal boot and installed envyng-gtk go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - System Tools - Envy

and uninstall the current driver. Reboot and then use Envy again to get the very latest stable driver and it will sort the thing out properly this time. It's a very neat little tool, great for sorting nVidia and Ati drivers.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Envy was a great neat little tool my neighbour showed me! I don't think many people know about it yet so i will try to get him to show me how to use it from the command-line. You're not making noob mistakes. This is quite advanced stuff, it's really annoying that we get all this at the start and then once we have got through it linux is fairly easy going and doesn't need us to be as advanced as we find ourselves by then! lol

One day linux will be pre-installed by choice and websites will give a choice of which OS your new machine is shipped with, but not today and doubtful any year soon! In the meantime we have to do things that would take a team of experts in the Windows world ;)

Congrats on getting this far!

For info about any command-line command try typing " --help" or sometimes " -h" after the command. This works in any linux distro. There are also "man" (=manual) pages but i still haven't found those yet lol. So for this case try

apt-get --help

Note that apt-get noramlly needs to be run as root user so you'll need to us

sudo apt-get

once you find out what the next part is! I am going to bump this as a thread as an "apt" issue but will also try to catch my neighbour for some help here!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ahhh, if you are getting to a working desktop then that's great! Just go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one (same as sudo). Note that all packages you have already installed have a green splodge beside them and to install something else you just right-click and choose appropriately. I prefer the "Search" button rather than the quick search tool because it looks through descriptions as well as titles so it lets be be a bit more vague. You could even try typing your make and model of graphics card to see if anything pops up! Definitely do a search for "envy" and see if it's not already installed. it's also worth clicking on "Mark all updates" before clicking on "Apply" to finalise everything for this session.

I much prefer Synaptic to apt-get! lol

Envy doesn't seem to work anymore!! Please re-post this as a new question because Launchpad doesn't really have any way of dealing with old questions!
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

Posting this again will give all the people who work at solving questions a chance to see it at the front desk when they pop-in
