Nautilus only presents the home directory

Asked by ealthuis

on a new install of 18.04LTS, when accessing the folder icon, only the home directory is displayed. The listing usually shown on the left is missing. I can not access any "system" directories, such as //var/log.

A listning of the tail of syslog shows an error, is that related and if si how do I fix it?

Is there an option under the "view" menu to bring it back?
