Lack of saa716x module in current kernel.

Asked by John May

I have located and downloaded the master file for this module. However I am unable to find any information at user level as how to configure and compile the file so I can insert it into my kernel.

My question has not at any tme changed. I chose to close it down,
as I was getting nowhere with the person that had chosen to answer to
try and answer it.

I have a TBS 6928 SE PCIE DVB Board. This board needs a saa716x driver

I can not find a driver that will load successfully, open or closed.
This appear to be because module saa716x in not in the kernel.

I have located, on git, the master file (saa716x-master.zip), for the
saa716x module. This surely is source of what I need.

I have fooled around with this file and tried to compile it without
success. There are a number of configuration files which obviously need
setting up.

I am not a programmer and there are no instructions based at user level
that I can find.

QUESTION.     HOW to deal with a master file of a module and get the
module into the current kernel.

Regards,

John May

REPLY TO MANFRED HAMPL

Hi Manfred. Since I had closed this down I did not expect to hear  from,
you again. I  re-posted the QUESTION in the hope that somebody who had
the knowledge or could forward it to somebody who had the knowledge

to answer it.

I have been using Ubuntu since the early offering of 5 CD's free,
Breezy Badger, in 2005. All LTS versions and several in between. Every
time I load a system I see "Need Help. ASK UBUNTU" What a crock!

."The first time I need help I pose a question to the official site I
fully expected it to be answered or disposition that it is pending or is
in the hands of somebody working on it. Not that "no details can be
given because the respondent does not own a DVB board.

All of course is now apparent, I am not actually speaking to
Ubuntu at all, but a bunch of hobbyist All the better to you, you are
filling a needed service but please don't get involved  in anything
outside your sphere of

kowledge and try and bluff your way through. You only make things worse.

So you're willing to help.Great1 So far you haven't given any
indication that you are able to help you just got farther and farther
off track. After asking where I got a saa716x master you never you never
gave the question a second thought. In fact you had got so far off you
seem to have convinced yourself that the question had changed and try to
blame me for lack of co-operation. The question has never changed you
just lost sight off it.

The question is still on the table. I don't care who answers it, If you
figure you you can answer it with co-operation, go right ahead I'll give
all the co-operation I can. Take all the time you want, read the
question, make sure you understand it, understand what I want. Think
about how you are going to approach it. If you have kept any of the
previous discourse, I would suggest you read through it do a little self
examination and see where you wentr off track. then get back to me and
let me know your decision.

Some preliminary remarks:

1. "If you have kept any of the previous discourse ...":
The full conversation related to the previous question is available at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/675968

2. If you are not satisfied with the responses that you receive (or do not receive) on Launchpad answers, you can try other Ubuntu support channels, see https://community.ubuntu.com/t/supporting-users/20

Now to your problem:

"I have located, on git, the master file (saa716x-master.zip) ...
I have fooled around with this file and tried to compile it without success ..."

I want to try reenacting what you are doing with the hope to find the steps that are necessary to successfully compile the module.
For this approach I need some information about your system, and about the source that you try compiling.

Please provide the output of the following commands:
uname -a
lsb_release -crid
lspci
dmesg | egrep -i 'dvb|saa|firmw'

and please provide a link to the source where you downloaded this saa716x-master.zip file.
I searched github and found several different versions of saa716x source. To understand what you are seeing I need to use the same version of the source.

Reply to Manfred Hempl.

Query as to whereabouts of saa716x master.

Tues. 8/1/19 13:15 Access GIT . Confirm continued availability of
saa716x master. Positive.

      Confirmed.  linux-saa716.x-master.zip is on GIT

      Request for system details.

Irrelevant.  File in question is a MASTER. Behavior would be
common against all kernels.

Thank you for the link reference.

Now I know which source you want to use (it could as well have been https://github.com/s-moch/linux-saa716x which also provides a linux-saa716x.master.zip file). And I see that it is linux-saa716x-master.zip and not linux-saa716.x-master.zip or saa716x-master.zip as written in some of your responses.

Please provide also the output of the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
lspci
dmesg | egrep -i 'dvb|saa|firmw'

If you think that these details are irrelevant, then I must assume that you know what is needed for compiling the kernel module and that you do not need anybody else's help.

You have to tell the Ubuntu release and kernel version, that it is possible to try building the module in the version that you need. It does not help if there is success in compiling a version for Ubuntu 14.04 with a 3.* version kernel, if you need the module for Ubuntu 18.04 with a 4.* version kernel (or something like that).

      BINGO.

So now you've found the reason why I am asking the question. I fail to
see why you are telling me  what I know though.

Just go ahead, open the file and run through all the config. files and
see where all the changes are necessary.

Then you can provide the answer

I am still waiting for you to deliver Ubuntu release number, kernel version and hardware details (via the commands in my previous comments).

Meanwhile I already started examining the linux-saa716x-master.zip file from https://github.com/bas-t/linux-saa716x and my impression is that it does not contain the source for building a saa716x kernel module, but only a saa7164 version. Are you definitely sure that this is the correct source, or have you just selected it because of its file name?

If I was to send requested information would you know where to put  it?

Am I definitely sure......? No but the first line of README.txt might be
something to go by.

Build a kernel with saa716x driver in-tree.

Sorry, I do not understand your latest comment.

My knowledge about "master" in github is just that this is the main version inside a certain repository. It does not give it any precedence over other repositories.

It seems that you were on a wrong track with the saa716x master.

I meanwhile started a different search and found the following:

https://www.tbsdtv.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=56
https://www.tbsdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=24722

This leads to https://github.com/tbsdtv/linux_media/wiki

I did the following on a test system (Ubuntu 18.04, 64bit, kernel version 4.15.0-43-generic):

I installed the prerequisites:
sudo apt install git libelf-dev libproc-processtable-perl
and then followed the instructions there.

This (after about half an hour of compiling) created three modules with saa716x in the name:
saa716x_core.ko
saa716x_hybrid.ko
saa716x_tbs-dvb.ko

I hope that either the *-hybrid or (more likely) the *_tbs-dvb module will work on your system with the TBS 6928 SE board.
I was not able to verify this, because (my initial disclaimer) I do not own such device myself, and up to now you have not provided the output of the command that would provide hardware details (lspci).

1. The kernel module that is build from this source is not named saa716x, thus "modprobe saa716x" still fails with "not found".

2. But there are two variants being built (probably for different cards using the saa716x chips), and the commands "sudo modprobe saa716x_hybrid" and "sudo modprobe saa716x_tbs-dvb" both work and load the respective kernel modules and several other kernel modules that they depend on.

3. If your system is correctly configured, then the needed kernel modules should be automatically loaded without "modprobe …" command at boot time.

The saa716x_tbs-dvb would probably be automatically loaded if hardware with one of the following hardware IDs is detected in the system:

You have refused to show the output of the lspci command, so I cannot verify whether your TBS 6928 SE board is among them.

THIS IS A REPLY TO MANFRED HAMPL NOT A CHANGE the QUESTION.

The question has remained the same since you first attempted to
answer it a number of weeks ago.
      I repeat'

"HOW do I build and insert the module saa716x into my current
kerneL from 'saa716x-master.zip"

Apparently you seem to think every time I reply it is a change in
question. This might accou8nt for the confusion the first first time you
tried to answer. May I remind you of you of your first reply;

"I am unable to give details I do not own a DVB board

Request to Manfred Hampl.
'
Pleaes enter 'sudo modprobe saa716x' into TerminaL

'cut and paste' and send me the resulting line.

Request to John May

Please enter the command

lspci

in a terminal window and copy/paste the output into a response in this question document.

I repeat

"HOW do I build and insert the module saa716x into my current
 kerneL from 'saa716x-master.zip"

The answer to this question is simple:
"You cannot. The file 'saa716x-master.zip' does not contain source code to build a module named saat16x."

I am terminating this. It is quite pointless continuing All you
are doing feeding me

information that has  no connection to the question.

You can't answer the question so why not put it on  " Ask Ubuntu" maybe
someone knows

the answer and you'll learning and can pass it onto me.
