If nothing works at all you might want to reinstall the whole operating system from the CD.

Before you do that you could try rebooting the computer and when you see the following message:

'Press ESC to enter menu...'

Hit Escape.

Select the Ubuntu option with (recovery mode) at the end. When it boots try the fix broken packages. When you reboot your install should work. If not a full reinstall would be the best option as you have no data on the Ubuntu system anyway.

i had ran into this problem b4. i think i seen every problem with linux there is. it might be gdm dont know why btu i had to get rid of it and i got xdm and it works great.
when you get to the login screen try this.

ctrl+alt+f1 (this will bring you to a terminal)
type in your username and password

now try:
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get upgrade
install all the upgrades

now sudo apt-get install xdm

when you install it it will come up with a screen that tells you so select your display manager select xdm

(you can also try installing kde or xfce (sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop or ubuntu-desktop (this is up to you)))

now after you installed xdm type:

sudo reboot

Can you help with this problem?
