how do I load itunes. I need to download an ipad os for a recovery?

I have an ipad that needs to be hooked up to a machine with itunes installed so that I can do a force boot and recovery.
I've tried to access itunes with " play on linux" with no joy. What am I doing wrong?
I don't own a copy of windows, let alone have it installed on any machine.
