Please Help!!! computer won't recognise dvds, or removable media!

Hello, I am new to Ubunti and am really having trouble using my laptop!

When I insert dvds or removable media (such as my wireless internet USB) the computer will not recognise them.
When I try to play dvds it says it does not recognise format???

Do I have to install more software or update packages?? No clue what to do! Please help!

As for the dongle, can you please post the output of lsusb, with it connected, of course? Thank you.
