Epson printer driver problem

Asked by Alan Schofield on 2018-11-28

Have Epson XP-205 printer. Ubuntu 18.04. USB connection. When trying to 'Add printer' I am offered driver epson-201202w. This does not appear to install correctly. I eventually end up with a generic dot matrix driver which does not work. The correct driver is available for download from the Epson web site. How would I install this manually?

Press the search button (magnifying glass)
On the next page press the "Download" button besides "ESC/P-R Driver (generic driver)"
Accept the license agreement and finally download
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.33-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb (if you have a 64 bit version of Ubuntu) or
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.33-1lsb3.2_i386.deb (if you have a 32 bit version of Ubuntu)

Issue the following commands

sudo apt install lsb
sudo dpkg --install Downloads/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.33-1lsb3.2_*.deb

This should enable you to select "Epson XP-205 207 Series" as printer type in the "add printer" dialogue and will provide the correct drivers.

Thank you. I did as instructed. Initially the printer did not function due to the fact that the generic dot matrix driver was still installed. I deleted the printer, restarted the computer and went through the installation. This time the driver for XP-205 showed in the list. When selected this gave me the option to overwrite the old driver which I did and then everything was fine. Many thanks.
