What can I do with cache, thumbnails directory?

Asked by feedfish

I have three directory which are sized more than 100 Mb each and I want to remove but I don't know what happens after.
These are:
.cache
.thumbnails
.mozilla

I would have know if there exist a sotware for deleting it properly or do I have to remove them manually?

It should be safe to remove the .cache and .thumbnails directory. The .mozilla directory is where your firefox profile is stored, if you remove it you will lose all addons, bookmarks, history and such. You probably don't want to remove .mozilla.

The .thumbnails directory stores thumbnails for your documents and pictures, if you delete it then the directory should be recreated and repopulated as thumbnails are generated (if you don't want any thumbnails open a nautilus window (such as your home folder), then go to Edit> Preferences and hit the Preview tab, then under show thumbnails select none).

The .cache directory is used to store relatively temporary items, such as the gedit recently used files list or files that speed up compiz (but are recreated when it is first run).

If you do remove them, I suggest you reboot afterwards just to be on the safe side. They will be recreated and populated as needed. There is no special application to remove them for you.
