syslog file is huge, filled with repeating message

Asked by Daniel Satanove

the file /var/log/syslog and some of the older files syslog.1 etc are huge, like 117GB. I have deleted some of the old ones. It doesn't seem like it happens every time I boot up, only sometimes. I took a look in the current syslog file to see what was up and I get the following 7 repeating lines:

What is this, and how do I get it to stop?

Additional notes: This problem persisted through reinstalling ubuntu (for an unrelated reason). I have also noticed my computer crashes sometimes, this might be related. I'll open a new question if this is solved and my computer still crashes.

@actionparsnip I don't know how to use that answer to fix my problem. It looks like there it is an extension.js that is misbehaving where in my case it is osdWindow.js?

I found this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1772677 which seems to be the same issue, but I'm not sure how to use the answers there to fix my problem.

Possibly related, my system crashed last night after I went to bed (I left the system on). It seems to be the same as this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1436168 which hasn't been resolved? My syslog.1 is 42 GB and was modified last at 00:06 last night, I'm not sure if I was using my computer at the time. My current syslog is at 78 GB and was last modified when I booted up my computer (which is probably to be expected?).

The above 7 lines is interspersed with the following two

Nov 26 03:00:43 functorbox gnome-shell[1844]: Object St.Icon (0x56292f8c3090), has been already finalized. Impossible to set any property to it.
Nov 26 03:00:43 functorbox gnome-shell[1844]: Object St.BoxLayout (0x56292f8d4c30), has been already finalized. Impossible to set any property to it.

and I also sometimes get this maybe as 1/10th of the content of the repeating messages, and usually following a lot of repetitions of the above two lines in a row:
