1. Are you aware that Ubuntu 18.10 (cosmic) has a shorter support lifetime (nine months) than Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) (two years)? If you upgrade to cosmic, you are forced to do regular updates every six months.

2. What is the output of the command
tail -n 30 /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log

Sorry for the delayed reply.

1. I am aware, this is just my personal desktop.

2. tail -n 30 /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log

Have you tried executing the release upgrade without additional parameters, i.e. with the plain "sudo do-release-upgrade" command (and what happens then)?

Yes, a `sudo do-release-upgrade` nets the same results

I haven't reacted for a while, so I want to ask whether you still have the problem that the release upgrade aborts without telling why.

If this problem is still open, what output do you receive for the commands

do-release-upgrade --version
DEBUG_UPDATE_MANAGER="Y" do-release-upgrade
