I just installed 18.04, it marked one of my hard drives as read only, how to fix?

Asked by AraiBob

I installed 18.04 yesterday, and one of the oddities is a hard drive is suddenly requiring my password for anything I try to do. VLC won't show a video. File manipulations required my password...

The settings allow 'Me' to see the files, but 'Root' is the setting for the group. I have tried to fix it using the panels, but so far, no joy.

For diagnostic purposes please provide the output that you receive for the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo fdisk -l
mount

Which one (in this output) is the disk in question?

Hello, I have tried a few things. Including having the file system mark every file on the drive as "Me", "Bob" which is the group I belong to. The first attempt failed / aborted. The second attempt appears to have worked, but not completely.

I have four 10-Terabyte WD Gold hard drives, and 3 ssd. One SSD has the O S on it. The other two are used for downloading to and for file conversions.
The 'first' WD Gold drive is the one that was marked as "Root" group. Any attempt to access it got a failure. Most applications, like VLC failed, noting it could not look at the device. Please note, I was looking at the video file in the file manager, clicked on it, and it failed.

Please note I have been using Ubuntu since 2010... And 18.04 LTS has caused me one kind of issue or another. I went back to 16.04 and I am hopeful this version of 18;.04 will work.

I do not see any indication that one of the hard drives would be read-only.
What I now assume is that the file ownership on one of the drives is wrong.

Which ownership and access rights settings do you see in the output of

ls -l /media/bob/
ls -l /media/bob/Dawl
ls -l /media/bob/Emma

Dawl is the drive that is not quite the way it should be. As I noted, I attempted to change every file using the panel for such things. It ran a long time.
The other three 10TB drives don't have an issue...

Thank you for your efforts.
ps. I use a file compare utility to check what I have on my drives, against USB drives. And what is different is moved. When I tried it, earlier, it would not let me see any of the drives. This was my first try to use Beyond Compare. The O S saw both the drive (Dawl) and the USB drive. but Beyond Compare would not show me any of the drives. I could not 'direct it' to the directories I wanted to compare.

I have another tool I use for this purpose, for years. Vice Versa. The problem is I have to install Wine, to install and run it. When I tried to do this install of Wine, it failed... Annoying.

Do you still see the drive as being marked read-only or has changing the ownership helped?

Ok, I am awake, for the new day. I decided to check the other drives.

Me - read and write
Bob - none

The group id of Bob had no access. And I suspect the software I want to use, runs not as 'Me', but under the group id of 'Bob'. So I have begun the efforts to fix this, and as you might imagine, the function / panel for this purpose gives me no feedback. Thousands of files, seem to be changed in an instance.

So, now, I am having to start the process and leave it up. I have no way to know for how long. another poorly done feature / utility.

I hope this fixes my problems. I don't recall having so many issues, the last time I installed (not an upgrade, an install) of 18.04. And when I went back to 16.04, there was NOT a single problem like this. very annoying.

So much for progress...

One more oddity... In the past, when I looked at a directory of videos, the graphic related to the video would have a 'picture' from within the video file. No more. What see, instead, is an orange colored 'film strip'. Not the 'preview' that has been the norm for so many years...

Is this another indicator of an access problem? If so, how to fix?

One more mystery. The 1TB ssd I use for my torrent downloads, is called 'quick'.
And it used to be mounted under /media/Bob/quick

Not today. It is now mounted under /mnt/02ceb32c-ab17-4d49-9454-51960adf29ce

And I cannot figure how that happened, nor how to fix it...

Who is "Me" ?
What is the output of the commands

whoami
groups
id

Is it /media/bob/ or /media/Bob/ ?
Linux systems are case sensitive!
