HDMI input for all in one Dell PC has no sound

Asked by Joe Miller

I'm using a Dell All in One PC, specifically the 5477 model, which has Ubuntu 18.10 installed. This PC includes an HDMI input cable option, which in theory should let me use the computer as a screen for my PS4. However, while the screen works perfectly and shows the PS4 as intended, there is no sound at all and nothing through the speakers. I tried to contact Dell support and they don't seem to think this is a hardware issue.

Most support what I've seen online suggests fixes for if a Ubuntu computer/laptop is used for HDMI output to another screen, but this is a different issue. Is there any fix for this? Thanks!

Did you go to the sound setting and check which output is selected?

Yes, it showed "Speakers - Built-in Audio" (the only option available).

Reinstall the of pulse audio device and try the following

Execute sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa

edit the file /etc/pulse/default.pa
find the line load-module module-switch-on-port-available
insert a # at the beginning of the line to disable automatic port switching
save the file and reboot.
