Firefox home page from My Webs.

Asked by Steven Shoen

Ubuntu 8.10, Firefox 3.0.8

I am a recent convert to Ubuntu and I love it. This is my first post on this forum.

I have a web that I created in my Documents folder. I use the html web for personal uses on my pc. It is not published online.

My home page is titled: index.htm and opens fine with Firefox when I browse to the folder and click on it. However when I try to use it as my Homepage I get the following error:
**********************************************************************
File Not Found

Firefox can't find the file at /home/steve/Documents/My%20Webs/index2.htm.

    * Could the item have been renamed, removed, or relocated?
    * Is there a spelling, capitalization, or other typographical error in the address?
    * Do you have sufficient access permissions to the requested item?
**********************************************************************
Any help would be very much appreciated.

You say the file name is 'index.htm' but the path shown in the error is 'index2.htm'.

You're right. The name is index2.htm, I was just stating that it was a htm file. The actual name shouldn't matter.

actually jeffrey is right about this.it does matter the name because firefox is looking for a file named index2.htm not index.htm so you have to change the path and write the right path to works.it doesn't matter when you are using an apache server.

I'm sorry that I'm not making myself clear. I DO have index2.htm selected as the homepage in Firefox. I will fix the the post.

Steven,

I cannot reproduce this error. It works properly without Firefox displaying any error. Tested on Firefox 3.0.8, Gecko/2009032711 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy)

I also note that that if I have a space in a directory (ie: "My Webs") the space is displayed normally and not as "%20" as your error indicates. I would delete the "My%20Webs" directory and recreate it as "My Webs" and then test your document.

You are right! Thanks much.

In Firefox I went to Edit > Preferences > Main and highlighted "%20" in homepage link. I replaced it by hitting the spacebar to put an actual space in.

Worked like a charm.

I don't know why but it was actually "%2520" instead of "%20" at the time I replaced it.

Thanks again Jeruvy,
Steve
