After upgrade to 4.15.0-36.39, boot requires recovery selection

Asked by Charles Clark

After upgrading to Ubuntu 4.15.0-36.39, booting the system only succeeds if I select the recovery version and say OK; otherwise the system freezes.

Of course, the auth, mail and syslogs only show me the steps in a successful system boot.

Could an unqualified system name be the cause?

Is there a crash log somewhere on the system I can examine after an unsuccessful boot?
