Can’t install downloaded themes on 18.04

Asked by Silvio Arnone on 2018-11-04

Can’t install downloaded themes, as for single user as putting the files on /usr/share/themes I have been trying with the following themes:
gnome-look.org
Windows 10 Light theme
This is a Windows 10 light theme for Gnome and Unity users and also works in linux mint

gnome-look.org
Glassfull 3.14
GNU/Linux = Debian 8 Jessie Gnome-Shell = 3.14.1 # maybe this is the problem here because I have Gnome-Shell 3.28.3

/usr/share/themes is part of the system area, and normal users are not allowed to change files there.
If you want to install a theme by copying it there, you need administrative authorizations.

You probably have to use a command like
sudo cp sourcefile /usr/share/themes
or something similar.

Aren't there any instructions how to install these themes?

>>> Do you think I don't know that Manfred?
If you read properly My question you can understand that I have been trying installation for single user (/home etc.) and for the whole system going to /usr/share/themes.

I have doubt for the second theme I have been trying because the Gnome Shell version is different but the first one (WindowsTheme) does'nt give any restriction to use it.

I can put the themes files in the appropriate path, the point is that Gnome Tweak Tool don't show them a too.

I am sorry, but I have problems in correctly understanding your questions. Maybe this is caused by the fact that English is not my mother tongue (and I do not know about yours).

What exactly is the problem that you want to describe in this question?
Are you unable to install the theme, or does it refuse to work?

I cannot see where you wrote that you
"have been trying installation for single user (/home etc.)"
You only wrote about "/usr/share/themes".

>>> Ahahah is here, the first line of the question
Can’t install downloaded themes,>>> as for single user<<< as putting the files on /usr/share/themes

Yes, language can be a problem English is'nt my mother language too and mine is not fluent for sure (I am Italian).

Exactly the problem is that after copying the theme files (folder) to the appropriate location as for single user as for the whole system, they don't come out on Gnome Tweak Tool which suppose to be the tool to install new themes on Ubuntu.

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said : #9

How does the page in gnome-tweak where you change the themes look like?
Is there a warning with an exclamation mark as described in https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/install-change-ubuntu-theme/ ?

Okkkk! SOLVED this issue too and I have to say that was my fault here too.
I mean, I have been installing from compressed package and done the right steps, everything was settled properly but... the themes I downloaded are not compatible with my Gnome-Shell version, that was the problem.
Downloaled new themes now paying attention to the Gnome-Shell version and everything works smooth :)

Thank you once again Manfred, all problems of mine with Ubuntu solved, only the "snap" folder annoying me (not allowed to rename it as "Snap") but apparently is a bug not fixed yet.

Cheers!
