Boot hangs after upgrading 18.04 to 18.10

I have a Lenovo H535s desktop (AMD64) with an Nvidia graphics card and Benq HDMI display. It has been running Ubuntu since at least 16.04 until 18.04.

Software update told me that 18.10 was available and offered me the opportunity to upgrade from 18.04LTS. When I clicked upgrade, nothing happened. I tried this several times with the same lack of result.

I searched a little and found zzUpgrade, which I used. After the upgrade completed, all reboots now hang after "Started GBOME display manager".

An additional note: I had previously (i.e. some months ago) installed Nvidia's own drivers.
