i downloaded ubuntu and i cant get it set up

i downloaded ubuntu the latest release before the beta release. not the beta release.
I run windows vista and if i turn off my laptop and tun it back on then it gives me the option of using vista or ubuntu...i select ubuntu and it acts like it is launching then it goes to a menu prompt or a c prompt and it stays there and doesnt do anything.
i can get a list of c prompt commands but i dont know how to set this thing up. how do i do this and doesnt it replace vista?
