Using Skype, I cannot hear the other party

Asked by ealthuis

This laptop, a Dell Vostro 3555 has since I upgraded to 18.04 LTS not let me hear the other party, this is so whether I use Skype, (recent update from Ubuntu) or chrome hangouts. We can see each other, the other party can hear me, I can not hear the other party. I hear the ringtone, but no voice.

What can be the problem with the sound card?

Has the other party checked their audio output settings?

Yes, we have been fighting this for some time now, and it happens in both Skype and Hangouts. In Skype I do not get the test question, the only sound I get is the bell ringing.

Before in 16.04, if we had that problem it was usually related to a setting and corrected very quickly.

Well I guess I have to eat some humble pie...

Actionpsrsnip question made me look at youtube, and of course connected to the TV via HDMI cable, sound was just perfect. I had to set the sound card to use HDMI, then when finished I turned off the TV and redirected sound to the laptop speakers. Then I started Skype and did the audio test and it worked just fine. This morning I noticed my contact in Europe was on line so I called and got an immediate answer and sound was OK both directions.

Thanks for aiming me at the real problem.
