could not acquire name on session bus

At Ubuntu login Screen, after I enter the password I am getting a blank screen with the following message:

"Could not acquire name on session bus"

Can anyone help me in solving this issue.

Are you connecting via VNC and logging in or are you sat at the system you are logging in to?

I am getting this error both through the general Login window as well as through VNC.
