loss of e-mail arhive when upgrading to bionic beaver

Asked by Stephen Sharples on 2018-10-12

Automatic upgrade from Tahir 16 to Beaver 18 failed. Clean iso of Beaver downloaded and installed on different partition. All Tahir settings and program installs lost need to recover Thunderbird e-mail archive (and other settings if possible) which is on another partition.

Unable to locate any earlier data / settings for Thunderbird. Have checked mozilla for solution and followed i.e. process looking for files with no extensions but unable identify archive files.

The e-mail archives are stored in a hidden folder below your home directory.
~/.thunderbird
You have to enable "show hidden files" (ctrl-h) in the nautilus file explorer to see hidden files.

What failure did you see in your attempt to do an in-place upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04?
Maybe it is easier to re-try this upgrade, instead of moving everything from the old installation to the new one.

Can you help with this problem?
