Display of email names in thunderbird obscured

The display of email received is obscured by rectangles 5 lines or less long. These are tied to the address selected by using the mouse. I am frustrated by trying many things to correct this matter. I also cannot seem to find good search terms to look for it. I have had the problem for a few weeks, so if it is common I think it would be at least worked upon.
