after login to my desktop the screen stays blank

I start up my computer and am asked the sda_3 password. I do so, and the login screen appears. I login without any problem, but the desktop remains blank. The mouse cursor is there and I can move it, but the desktop is blank (black).
what happens and how do i get out of it? I'm running Ubuntu 18.04

Does the system have a make and model?
