Uninstalled Evolution, lost menu bars, other fixes have not worked 8.04

Asked by opcn

I'm not the only one to have this problem, but the fixes I've seen don't work.

I removed Evolution (with the synaptic package managerl) and on startup lost my menu bar. I tried to pause startup at the "GRUB loading" stage but discovered that I don't have one of those, and Esc. does not stop start up at any point (I do get to stop it with F2 or F12 during a dell loading screeen) so I can't use the restore setting. I tried Sudu Nautilus (sudu command not found) then sudu su (again, sudu command not found) then fsck (fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)) is what it returned. I cannot boot from the CD because I am on a webbook and have no optical drive, my jumpdrive is encrypted and refuses to work with linux, so thats no good either.

I found the synaptic deal, and tried to reinstall, but I haven't got administrative privileges so I cannot apply the installation, is this what I should be doing? If so how do I get administrative privileges? If not what should I do? Thanks.

While I probably deserve to be ridiculed for my noob moves I figured out how to fix it. I made a download script in the synaptic deal (I know, its hard to handle my technical jargon, try to keep up) to download ubuntu-desktop and then ran it in my terminal, then after the packages had downloaded to my desktop I double clicked on them and installed them one by one unlit the system locked up, pulled the battery and when it started back up I had one bar across the bottom, windows style. Close enough for horse shoes and hand grenades. Still no clue on the Admin rights, but thats for another day I suppose.

I saw this on another post - had the same problem - lost then menu/desktop by using synaptic to remove evolution.

They should warn us if we are deleting critical files that are part of the os....

This may work (from the terminal)

sudo apt-get remove evolution gnome-pilot (also to remove pilot)

ps why cant we remove the floppy drive - who on earth has these?
