login username and password unknown

i'm a soldier and a friend gave me a computer before he deployed without giving me the username and password i have no way to get in touch with him. i know nothing about ubuntu and do not know how to recover the username and password im not very smart when it comes to computers so please try to put it in kid terms thank you my system is running ubuntu 7.10 and the computer bios has a lock on it is there any way to get arround it

this did not solve my proble also it has a lock on the computer bios

In GRUB, select Recovery Mode. When the system is up and running in single user mode, type
passwd username

where username is the name of your user (list the contents of the /home directory (ls /home) to see which regular users exist.)

just does not work at all as am typing corrrect case letters but keeps giving me a incorrect username or password must use correct case letters & continually loops back with same message does any one know how to fix? as do not understand the edit part yet but trying to learn. I've tried all angles but nothing works even went to reinstall but nothing works get to loggin screen then it hangs
