It seems in the newer releases the open source driver will support it due to the newer Xorg or Wayland

If you install 14.04 LTS then you will be able to use the proprietary driver. Are you planning to 3D game on the system?

Thanks

not planning for 3D gaming, just need to install drivers and utilize the hardware. So it seems i have to wait for the drivers supporting 18.04.1 LTS and 14.04 proprietary drivers don't suit right?

The open source drivers will utilise the hardware too. If you aren't gaming then you will probably find they do what you need. They are developed for the AMD GPU and their functionality. It's not a generic driver. It's just not made by AMD.

If AMD decide to bundle in support for your GPU with support for the Xorg or Way land version in Bionic then it can be installed. This is the disadvantage of proprietary drivers.
