Unable to update kernels following bionic beaver update
Hi, after doing the bionic beaver update i restarted and computer froze pre-startup; this happens every time I turn the computer on now. I have to press the restart button, then go through ubuntu recovery start and start using old kernel, which works, but when I try to download the new update it doesn't like it at all, comes out with loads of issues and aborts. Additionally, fills the boot drive to the brim with old, some obsolete kernels. I have no idea what I'm doing, if anybody can help I'd rally appreciate it. Thanks, Robbie

This is somewhat unexpected. The initrams files for old kernels were re-created, although these kernels are not installed any more.
What is the output of

This was a bug step forward.
Now try rebooting. I hope that the system will already be able to boot the 4.15.0-33-generic kernel (to be confirmed with the command "uname -a").
If booting the 4.15 kernel works, then you can uninstall another old kernel with the command
sudo dpkg --purge linux-image-
And then hopefully the command
sudo dpkg --configure -a
will successfully finish.
(There is some additional clean-up work necessary, but don't expect another answer from me for the next 20 hours)

OK, I'll try reboot and let you know. Many, many thanks again Manfred; I am eternally in your debt. Hugely appreciated.

(sorry, it took longer for me to come back, and I probably will not be very active during the coming days.)
You should clean up obsolete configuration files for packages that have already been removed. the command for this is:
dpkg --list |grep "^rc" | cut -d " " -f 3 | xargs sudo dpkg --purge

There are at least two more commands which I recommend to execute (for clean-up):
apt-mark auto linux-headers-
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

Try again, but you have to copy/paste all lines if the first command at once
sudo apt-mark auto linux-headers-
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
