Ubuntu 18.04.1 freezes before showing up the Log-In Screen with Ubuntu Logo with purple background

Asked by A Raghuram

I installed Ubuntu 18.04.1 by creating a bootable USB on WIndows 10. When I boot using the USB everything works fine and my Samsung 19" monitor is correctly recognized and the resolution is correctly taken as 1440x900 (Aspect 16:10), which is the native resolution of the monitor.

But, when I boot using the HDD, the system freezes at the Ubuntu Logo screen (purple background). When I boot through recovery mode on HDD, the system boots properly but the screen is detected as "default" and the resolution 1280x1024 (5:4) and the resolution 1440x900 is not listed at all for me to select.

The output of terminal command "lshw -C video" is as under:

  *-display UNCLAIMED
       description: VGA compatible controller
product: 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
       version: 10
       width: 32 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list
       configuration: latency=0
       resources: memory:fdf00000-fdf7ffff ioport:ff00(size=8) memory:d0000000-dfffffff memory:fde00000-fdefffff memory:c0000-dffff

I am not an expert on Ubuntu/Linux commands. Please guide me how to correct the above issue, so that I can boot from the HDD itself with correct screen resolution.

Please send your reply to email ID as well.

Regards.

While booting from HDD, when I choose Recovery Mode and from there Resume normal boot (without doing any thing else), the system boots properly but with the screen resolution issue mentioned above.

It is fully installed. However, as suggested in one of the community posts, I uncommented the line "WaylandEnable=False" statement in the "/etc/gdm3/custom.conf" file and rebooted. Now, the everything works okay including monitor detection/screen resolution upon normal HDD boot up.

Please, however, let me know if the aforesaid changes I made will have any bad effects or technical issues going forward.

Regards.
