both wired and wireless connection to Internet not working

Asked by Gstok

I started up Ubuntu for the first time and everything worked just fine, I made no changes to the network that would prevent it from operating appropriately. When I restarted, the button to turn on my wireless card wouldn't work and I cannot get the wireless light to come on. I have tried a number of things and after an hour of messing with it, I still have no internet

But the wireless was working the first time you started your computer?
Were you on a LiveCD or did you boot from harddrive?

If you go to System-->Administration--> Hardware Drivers does it list anything with broadcom?

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude install hwinfo
hwinfo --netcard
sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Keep in mind that one or more of the following 4 basic components need to be configured correctly so that wireless can work correctly in Linux:

Wireless configuration in the BIOS, hardware wireless switch setting, active wireless driver version, and firmware for the wireless chipset (stored as a file in Linux).

Regards,

Mark

@ Isak Frants no nothing with Broadcom is listed
@ Mark Rijckenberg, I will try that, but getting access to the ethernet cord is difficult, my roommate works from home and has to have a direct connection.... thus why i use wireless.... but i will let you know if that helped

Hi,

I recommend booting your computer using a LiveCD and testing your wireless and wired connection while in the LiveCD session. Only install from the LiveCD, if everything works as expected.

Here are some LiveCD's to test:

http://www.mandriva.com/
http://www.pclinuxos.com/
http://www.mepis.org/
http://fedoraproject.org/

Hope one of these LiveCD's gives you a working Internet connection.

Regards,

Mark
