Boot problems following upgrade

Following an upgrade from 14.* to 16.*, on start up I get a screen starting 0.451988 Kernal panic-not syncing, down to 0.454012 (end trace 57340ffd8bd4bc43.
I turn off, and switch back on to get a screen GNU Grub 2.02 beta2 starting ubuntu Lindux 3.13.0-153 generic, down ubuntu Lindux 3.13.0 24 generic (recovery mode).
Taking the last I then get to a screen Recovery menu starting Resume normal boot to System summary, and then taking the resume normal boot the system boots as it should.

I would like the system to boot straight away, upto the password
