Make a bootable usb on Windows for Mac

Asked by Mark

I am having a problem with a Mac Mini that only runs Lion OSX. I cannnot upgrade it past this which pretty much makes it obsolete for running current programs. I want to put Ubuntu on it as the only OS. However due to the age I am having great difficulty with this. I would like to find out if I can use a Windows 10 laptop to burn a Mac version Ubuntu OS onto a bootable USB for my Mac Mini? I am thinking this will never happen and may as well throw it in the garbage. Any suggestions? Everything I have tried so far by using the Mac directly to install has failed.

Unetbootin or rufus are good. Macs aren't special anymore. It's just an overpriced PC

Great I will try that. One other question. I have a USB drive that I bought online from Microsoft with Windows 10 on it. It is their bootable flash drive to install Windows 10. However it was ordered for a PC. Can I still use it on my Mid 2007 Mac Mini? If it is just and over priced PC then I cannot see that this will be an issue. Is It?

Yes it should be OK as long as the BIOS can boot USB. You'll probably find the drive needs to be formatted to FAT32 and not NTFS

Can you help with this problem?
