system freeze, mouse pointer works

Asked by penguin

When using browser, firefox, for e.g., several tabs open and all of a sudden, the system is not usable. The mouse pointer might or might not work...sometimes, the mouse pointer can be moved but nothing can be 'clicked' or chosen.

I need to hard reboot. Is there some way I can open a task manager, at least, so I can shut down the browser or some programs to see if that helps?

CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the task manager, for e.g.? Currently, the default setting is to 'log out' of the session (useless, imho).

I'm using Ubuntu Gnome, recently upgraded to 18.04 but problem occurred in 17.10, also. The video card is a nvidia gtx 750 and I currently am using the proprietary nvidia driver, 390.48. (as of today, July 16/'18).

Currently, I have to hit the reset button on the computer as a 'solution.'

I suggest you test your RAM using Memtest86 from GRUB as a good starting point

Why?

Because if the RAM is bad then programs in RAM may misbehave. It also costs nothing.

Why ask?

Can you help with this problem?
