Thunderbird subject lines contain icons

Lately my Thunderbird (15.8.0) has been showing subject lines that contain icons. These icons obliterate the subject lines in adjacent messages. How can I turn this off?

Although I haven't been able to prove it yet, it sounds like very good work around. And I hope the great teams at Ubuntu or Thunderbird will devise a proper solution.
