14.04 boots to grub screen

Asked by Mark Malin

After the most recent 14.04 update, I restarted as the directions said to and my HP Pavilion went to the grub directory with 3 options.1- Ubuntu, enter. Screen goes dark then comes back to the same screen. 2-advanced options for Ubuntu, chose recovery mode, enter, comes back to grub screen. 3-system setup, enter, to startup menu. All selections eventually bring me back to grub screen. Is there a command that will boot me correctly or get me out of this 'pit'?
I can power off but when I power on again it is still stuck in this.
I am expecting this to boot normally on power up.

Drop to root recovery console and run:

mount -O remount,rw /
update-grub
reboot

Does that work OK?

The screen it boots to is GNU GRUB with 3 options- *Ubuntu, Advanced options for Ubuntu, and system setup.

The 1st choice goes nowhere.

2nd gives me a page of boot choices and recovery modes but they don't boot when selected.

3rd choice gives me the startup menu F1, F2, F9, F10, F11

Everything that tells me it will boot goes blank then back to the first described screen above.

It is all a series of dead ends.

Grace be with you,
Mark Malin
