OS 16.04 LTS Software center mot working properly
OS 16.04 LTS Software center when opened will display only 7 available new programs for "ALL" available programs. Not much of a selection!
Then when I click on "Installed" programs there is only one item displayed called "Core". That's it. As though I don't have a bunch of things already installed.
I have used the Software Updater and it now says that the system is up to date. Yet the "updates" button in the Software Center shows 1 update- which is comprised of: gnome-software; nome-software-
It seems odd that the Software Center would have updates when the Software Updater indicates that all updates have been made. Is this another glitch or have I been invaded?
Obviously something is going on, needs fixing and I am a neophyte at best.
What must I do to repopulate the programs into the software center or fix the glitch that's blocking it?
And is it OK to update from the Software Center as well as the Software Updater?
I have an HP 8540p laptop with core i7 CPU M 620 @ 2.67GHz × 4 with 3.7G of RAM. I am only using the UBUNTU 16.04 OS on it.
Thanks,
Mike

I see two unexpected items in your output:
1. There is a newer version from xenial-backports available, but not installed on your system
2. The error message

ok, the first command did not have the desired results (and consequently the second one as well), try again with
sudo apt-get install appstream/
sudo appstreamcli refresh --force

Did you now install the updated version of appstream or did you abort the installation at the "Do you want to continue? [Y/n]" prompt?

I aborted the installation - shall I do the installation?

Yes, of course that was the idea:
Perform the update to the newest version of the appstream packages to check, whether that "some metadata was ignored due to errors" message is still shown. (This would point towards faulty data.)

I also performed this as previously instructed:
sudo appstreamcli refresh --force
AppStream system cache was updated, but problems were found: Metadata files
have errors: /var/cache/
I looked at the fwupd.xml file, opened it, and found this:
XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: file://
Line Number 265, Column 61: <checksum
filename=
type="sha1"
I hope all of this adds some helpful information.

This now seems to be Bug #1780520 (or Bug #1780442 ).
There are some comments on the web recommending the following as a workaround:
Edit the /var/cache/
"Firmware_
into
"Firmware_

Yes. Run:
sudo cp /var/cache/
sudo gedit /var/cache/
Then make the change.

I've been having this issue also since mid July. I went through and made the change you noted to line 265 of /var/cache/
filename=
However, running 'sudo apt update' still gives the same issue:
AppStream system cache was updated, but problems were found: Metadata files have errors: /var/cache/

This still happens intermittently. It may happen once and the next time sudo apt update is run the issue is gone.

@chris pollock: Please do not piggyback on somebody else's question, but create a question document for yourself.
I assume that your problem is caused by an error when trying to edit the faulty fwupd.xml file.
Please create a separate question document and provide the contents of lines 250-280 of that file, together with basic information about your system (like uname -a and lab_release -crid).
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask michael doran for more information if necessary.
