Hello Simon Porter -

< ubot5> A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter.

If there is success with nomodeset, we can then consider installing the nvidia proprietary driver .

My bit to try and help -

Pressed e in the grub menu on Ubuntu, put on the end of the line where it says 'quiet splash' the command 'nomodeset' no mode set, then pressed f10 to save and boot, which then booted into ubuntu with low graphics settings, I then went into terminal and downloaded the additional drivers using 'ubuntu-drivers devices' command to determine which driver I needed. I then used the command 'sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390' which installed the driver I needed
