Why information “.....configured multiple times ...” appears while updating Ubuntu 18.04

Asked by Navin Talati

I upgraded Ubuyntu 16.04 to 18.04 as detailed in question/669283 under Ubuntu in launchpad.net. Titled as “Desktop screen disappeared on upgrading Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS”

 https://answers.launchpad.net/buntu/uquestio+n/669283

When I apply “sudo apt-get update” command, alongt with Hit: ‘s list it gives information list of so many packages stating
“.....configured multiple times in /etc/apt/sources.list:6 and /etc/apt/sources.list:98” etc.

The actual OUT PUT is as under:
navin@linux:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for navin:

The Google Earth repository doesn't support 32bit Ubuntu. Is your CPU not 64bit!?

If you look at the contents of the sources.list file, you can see that starting with line 96 the contents a repeating what there is already at the beginning.
Edit that file and delete everything after line 95.
Then replace all occurrences of "xenial" by "bionic" except in the second line (for the cdrom).

There must be an additional file for chrome in the /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory.
You have to insert "[arch=amd64]" in the lines of that file to look similar to
deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/… … …

Sir,
As my linux knowledge is very limited, I physically I explored the file as under:

Home-->Other Locations-->Computer-->etc-->apt-->It contains 4 Folders (apt.conf.d; references.d; sources.list.d; and trsted.gpg.d ) & 4 files (sources.list; sources.list.save; trsted.gpg; and trsted.gpg~ )

Out of those above, only “sources.list.save” file is opening (and hance I think could be edited). Its conternt is as under:

I am sorry if my instructions were not sufficient, but due to the fact that the Launchpad user-ID Navin Talati was already registered more than seven years ago I did not expect that you have only "very limited technical linux knowledge".

You have to use the command line for doing the changes:

Open a terminal window by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t
In the terminal window that opens enter the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
This will ask for your password as confirmation for an administrative action, but please note that you will not get any feedback when entering the password (no echo, not even '*' placeholders).
After successfully entering the password an editor window will open, with the sources.list file loaded.
Scroll down to line 95 and delete everything from this position to the end of the file.
Using the search and replace dialogue replace all occurrences of the string "xenial" by "bionic" except in line 2.
Save the file and close the editor.
This should solve the "configured multiple times" messages.

For the "i386" problem we need the output that you receive when you execute the command
ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list.d
in a terminal window.

Sir,
Thank you for the systematic detailed instructions to me to be followed. This will definitely help me.

( Though I am using ubuntu for many years but being a Sr.Citizen, I do not have any background of computer science, I feel difficult to operate. as I have read somewhere that only apply the command if you know that what you are doing - otherwise don't. As wrong command may lead to more problem. So I do not dare!)

I will do and let you know the stuff operation and results, suggested by your esteemed-self.

Right now I am giving you the output of "ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list.d" for the "i386" problem - which is as under:

--------------------------OUT PUT ------------------------------------------
navin@linux:~$ ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list.d
total 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 175 Jun 21 18:13 google-earth-pro.list
navin@linux:~$

Your last comment is sufficient to provide full instructions also for the "i386" problem.

In addition to the changes to /etc/apt/sources.list as given in my previous comment do the following:

Open a terminal window and issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth-pro.list

An editor window will open with a file loaded (probably just one or two lines).
One of the lines will start with

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb ...

You have to insert some specific code after the first word making it

deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb ...

Save the file and close the editor.

For verification whether this has solved all warnings and errors, please execute the command
sudo apt-get update
and copy/paste all output into this question document that we can see the results.

Is is necessary to keep the sequence of editing files First as per #8 and then as per #10 ?
Or could it be done in any sequence ?
