Thunderbird icons

My problem is that when some key words are in the emails I get in Thunderbird a picture (icon) such as a Crown or Lorry appears and blocks out a lot of other email. I would prefer not to have them. How do I turn them off?

 sudo apt-get install fonts-symbola
