Asked by arunkumargetty

Hi,

I have two computers which are used by two manchines. one of the computer has Ubuntu 14.04 and in it all Serial ports are working fine, when comes to another computer it is using 8.04 but 2 serial ports are missing in it ttyS4 and ttyS5.

Ubuntu 16.04 it shows like this

$ dmesg |grep ttyS
[ 1.813244] 00:03: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4, base_baud = 115200) is a 16550A
[ 1.843455] 00:04: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3, base_baud = 115200) is a 16550A
[ 1.875041] 00:05: ttyS2 at I/O 0x3e8 (irq = 10, base_baud = 115200) is a 16550A

[ 1.972545] 00:08: ttyS5 at I/O 0x2d8 (irq = 11, base_baud = 115200) is a 16550A

Support for Ubuntu 8.04 has ended in April 2010, this is eight years ago. see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
The only reasonable action is upgrading to a supported Ubuntu release (or overwriting your installation with a supported release).

this is a small company they are not willing to upgrade, the Serial ports are avaliable in system and assigned correctly. Is their anyway without upgrading to open the remaining 2 Serial ports in 8.04.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases and you will see that there is no support for Ubuntu 08.04 any more.

If an Ubuntu release is in "end of life" status, it will not get any corrections and bug fixes any more, not even for critical vulnerabilities like meltdown, spectre, shellshock, heartbleed, poodle, ...

Ubuntu 8.04 probably is vulnerable to several of them.

Your request is somewhat similar to asking for help with Windows 95.

Can you help with this problem?
