During the upgrade on june10th 2018, the laptop shut off and when I turn it on and boot screen comes up requesting a username and password.

During the update the laptop shut off and and is asking for a username a d password.
After I type it in gives me an option to type in name@name-laptop:"$
In a dos like screen.
Also says Cannot add PPA: 'ppa:"ubuntu-x-swat/ubuntu/xupdates'.
ERROR: '"ubuntu-x-swat' user or team does not exist.

Dell laptop VOSTRO1015 Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.13.0-151-generic i686)

Using the x-swat PPA really isn't wise if you are inexperienced with Ubuntu.

I suggest you run:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-deaktop

If this installs OK, run:

sudo reboot
