Ubuntu boot stuck at "Started update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes"

Asked by Sohail Musa Mahmood on 2018-06-12

Dear support

I have Dell latitude E6440 with dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 16.04 . I had an update yesterday which required system restart on ubuntu. However I have been never able to logged inn again back to ubuntu. The boot up system stuck at "Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes".
My data is still there, but ubuntu gui is not starting. However I am able to log in as root user by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1 and access my data.
I have tried several solutions since yesterday, but without any luck .
