Thunderbird keeps bombarding inbox with repeat emails each time I open or ask to fetch emails how do I fix

The repetition of emails in my inbox each time I open Thunderbird is tedious. How do I prevent this from happening

Please explain what your problem is in a more elaborate way that we can get a better understanding what there is happening on your system.

You should at least provide information about the following three questions:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem.

Hello Manfred the problem appeaars to have started with the download of Ubuntu 18.04. After looking at another site I tried unticking the box 'retain on server'. the problem appears to have solved itself. I just do not know how it occured as I was getting +/- 2000 emails in my inbox each time I opened Thunderbird. I am unwell at the moment so have not been able to give any further attention to this. Thank You Catherine
