Oracle is the closed source java.
Did you run:
sudo apt-get update
First?

Happened numerous times
I finally tried some suggestions from openstack & ubuntu etc. but the
results were "failed"

Maybe your problems with java7 and java9 are caused by the fact that these versions are not supported any more by oracle.

OK that makes sense.
I'm just confirming ...
Have I created a mess? What version is this?
java version "1.8.0_171"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_171-b11)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.171-b11, mixed mode)
Should I go ahead with ...
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linuxuprisi
sudo apt update
sudo apt install oracle-
Thanks

Tried the link you suggested ...
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linuxuprisi

I can't tell what the following means ...
Java binaries are not hosted in this PPA due to licensing. The packages in
this PPA download and install Oracle Java 10 (JDK 10), so a working
Internet connection is required.

It seems I have been abandoned...

I would like to comment with a broader perspective:
There are two different java program families: openjdk (open source, http://
You have to decide which family you want to use.
Openjdk can be packaged in the Ubuntu repositories, but Oracle java cannot (due to licensing restrictions). There are installers on Ubuntu that download Oracle java from the Oracle web pages after asking for confirmation of the licensing terms.
Oracle Java version 9 was supported only for a short time, and meanwhile has been replaced by version 10.
I have not checked how the Oracle Java 9 downloaders work, but I assume that they try downloading a file from the Oracle server which Oracle does not offer any more.
For further diagnostics, what is the output of the following commands:
uname -a
lsb_release -crid
apt-cache policy oracle-

All the packages that you use are from PPAs.
The contents of a PPA lie fully in the responsibility of its provider. Please contact them if you have a problem with a package from a PPA.
In you case it's https:/
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Farren Dilon for more information if necessary.
