after i upgrade 8.04 to 8.10 should "system monitor" reflect the change?

Asked by STEVE G

I went through the steps to upgrade 8.04 to 8.10. Show "normal releases" etc. I never saw the message that "8.10 is available", but I did pick up some files that I did not have previously. I ma not sure if I have 8.10 or not. Should the "system monitor" show the change? It does not do so now.

Using Dell Mini 9

As I can see you've been referred to the "update manager" as a solution, so after checking that "normal release" scroll menu you should click the "close" button after which the system will automatically request an action, click Reload and the update process will start ... after going through that update process just run your synaptic (System => Administration => Synaptic Package Manager), click the "Mark all upgrades" button then "Apply" button (the process takes a while even with broadband connexion and is subject to failures so make sure you reach the end successfully otherwise you can post your printed error message to help you out solving it).

Good Luck :)

Thank you for your response.

I backed off from the "normal release"", which I had already done, reinserted "normal release", and clicked "close". Nothing happened i.e. There was no "reload" to click on.

Earlier today I did the bit with Synaptic, mark all upgrades etc. Didn't see anything about upgrading to 8.1.

Everything I see says I still have 8.04.1.

Can I just load 8.10 directly from a site and forget the upgraqde part?

Mr. Rhouma:

Thank you for you patient responses. I am a 71 year old man that is not new to computers, but I am new to Ubuntu Linux.

I did what you said was ok and loaded 8.10 from Michigan Tech U. It came in just fine. Now I have a dumb question. How do I install it? I don't see it on the desktop. I tried a restart but that didn't do it. I am sure there is a simple answer that I don't see in my book.

I am also wondering why some of the buttons you referred to earlier didn't appear on my machine. Could it be that Dell set things up to make major upgrades an effort? Seemed to quit at the "state" item.

Thank you. Steve in Michigan
