external drives not on launcher in Ubuntu 18.04

Asked by micah

Since Ubuntu has moved from Unity, my external drives which normally had icons on the launcher when active now show up on the desktop and on top of other icons. Is there a way to get the icons back on the launcher and remove them from the desktop?

What file system are you using please?
Do you use the safe remove feature in the OS before unplugging it physically?

One of my drives is NTFS (internal drive with toggled power used for video editing) while all my thumb drives are fat 32.
Most of the time I am using the "safe removal" however this was never an issue until the switch from Unity to Gnome.

There is. You can do it in Nautilus.

If you are using NTFS then I suggest you get it chkdsk'd in a. Windows based OS to make sure the file system is consistent and without errors.

The NTFS support in Linux is a best-effort. NTFS is proprietary to Microsoft and only they know how it really works. They don't share.

You should always safe remove FAT32. It's not very resilient. Get them checked (you can check FAT32 in Linux) then try mounting

Can you help with this problem?
