Could not install 18.04 from 17.10

Asked by Robert Pearson

When trying to install 18.04 I got an error window with the following:

Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg -configure -a).

The terminal window is frozen so I cannot show the installation log.

Don't install updates as part of the install. Disconnect from the Web. You can run updates once the OS is installed

Are you booting to the install media and updating that way?

I was not installing updates as part of the install.
I was not booting to the install media.

A window opened and claimed that version 18.04 LTS was available. I used that window. A later window opened and said that the installation aborted and that data was being collected to help find the bugs.

It seem that 10.04 LTS is not ready for use.

10.04 was released in 2010 and its support ended in 2015. It's a dead release.

Sorry I meant 18.04 not 10.04. My mistake. I still have not recovered from all the damage the installation did to my system.

When will 18.04 actually be ready to release?

Yes its been used by loads of people.

What state is the OS in presently? Can you run normal updates?

No! All updates are set to Bionic not Artful.

Your output confirms that your system has successfully been upgraded to 18.04.

There are still some mirror issues:

In your sources.list configuration there are some outdated references to artful instead of bionic.
And there are repository sources listed that do not contain software for bionic.

Issue the command

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

change all occurrences of "artful" by "bionic" except in the first line
delete the last two lines (those containing dl.winehq.org)
save the file and clos the editor.

Apparently you have another outdated reference in an additional config file in a subdirectory.
Issue the command

grep swi-prolog /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

and delete the file that is listed, with a command like
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/swi-prolog-artful.list
(adapt the file name in the command to the file name shown in the grep command!).

The repeat the command

sudo apt-get update

and report the results.

Also thank you for the timely and accurate help. 20 years ago I was a Unix guru, but I am a neophyte in Linux. Both Windows and Mac help is relatively useless. First I have to train their second-tier help in what the problem is, then they are usually helpless. Feedback for bugs go ignored. I pointed out bugs in Mac OS X 10.4 that were not fixed in 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 and 10.10. Microsoft wanted me to pay them to fix the bugs in their code. They refused to pay my normal consulting fee.

The output looks good, no error messages any more.

There is one additional cleanup action that you could execute:

Your output shows that there are several packages installed that are not needed (any more).
The command for the cleanup would be

sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

If there is no further left, problem then you might mark this question document as "solved".

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Robert Pearson for more information if necessary.
