cryptsetup failure after upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04 (desktop)

Asked by pieterjan

I'm having some major issues with linux:
Friday evening I decided to update from 17.10 to 18.04.

After rebooting the issues started ... apparently something went wrong with cryptsetup.
As usual it asks for the password to continue the boot however this time it returned the following
error - cryptsetup(sda3_crypt): cryptsetup failed, bad password.

I checked the error messages by pressing the ESC button and was greeted with the following:
WARNING: failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning
volume group "ubuntu-vg" not found
cannot process volume group-vg.

After a few failed logins i get dropped in a shell (initramfs)

----

Looked a bit around in that limited shell but could really pin point the issue any further.

So i used a live linux usb device and booted from there. I was able to decrypt the luks partition
(confirming the suspicion that i had earlier). However i'm struggling to decrypt my private desktop
(encrypted homefolder) which you can recover via ecryptfs (you need to add the universe packages first
via /etc/apt/sources.list) this requires a passphrase though which i don't have *sigh*

Did you have caps lock on when you typed the password?

Try it on and off. Does it make a difference

Can you help with this problem?
